HowtoorganiseaReclaimtheNightmarchFirstofall,it'sgoodtopointoutwhatReclaimtheNight(RTN)is.
It'straditionallyawomen'smarchtoreclaimthestreetsafterdark,ashowofresistanceandstrengthagainstsexualharassmentandassault.
Itistomakethepointthatwomendonothavetherighttousepublicspacealone,orwithfemalefriends,especiallyatnight,withoutbeingseenas'fairgame'forharassmentandthethreatorrealityofsexualviolence.
Weshouldnotneedchaperones(thoughthatwholeMrDarcysceneisarguablyabitcool,asisVictorianclothing,butnotthevalues).
Weshouldnotneedtohaveamanwithusatalltimestoprotectusfromothermen.
Thisisalsothereasonwhythemarchesaretraditionallywomen-only;havingmentheredilutesourvisi-blepoint.
Ourmessagehasmuchmoresymbolismifwearewomentogether.
HowmanymarchesdoyouseethroughyourtowncentrethataremadeupofjustwomenExactly.

Anyway,theRTNmarchesrststartedinseveralcitiesinBritaininNovember1977,whentheWomen'sLiberationMovement(WLM)waslastatitsheight,aperiodcalledtheSecondWave.
Theideaforthemarcheswascopiedfromco-ordinatedmidnightmarchesacrossWestGermancitiesearlierthatsameyearinApril1977.
Themarchescametostandforwomen'sprotestagainstallformsofmaleviolenceagainstwomen,butparticularlysexualvio-lence.
Todaywemarchforthesamereasons,exceptifanything,thesituationisworsenowthanitwasthen.
Thenwomenwereappalledthatonly1in3rapistswereeverconvicted;todaythatgureisaround1in20.
It'simportantthatasmanywomenaspossibletaketothestreetstosaythatthisisnotaccept-ableandtodemandjustice.
Wewomenmakeupthebackboneofeverysocialmovementgoing,forpeace,fortheenvironment,forchildren'sandanimalrights,againstwarandracism;yetwedon'tspecicallytakeupourownrightsnearlyoftenenough.
Andwehaveeveryrightto.
Andweneedto;nowmorethanever.
So,whatingredientsdoyouneedtostartyourownRTNmarchFirstofallyoutakesomenechocolate,milkordarkwilldo,fairtradeisbest,veganisbetter.
Andyoueatthat.
Thenyousettotryingtondsomepolitical,savvywomenwithtimeontheirhands.
Youneedtondatleastveorsixofthesewomen.
Thisisthehardpart.
Theycansometimesbestolenfromothergroups,thoughthiswon'tenamouryoutoyourlocalStoptheWarortradeunionbranch,buthey,desperatetimescallfordesperatemeasures.
Ifyouareastudent,youmayndtherecruitmenteasier,thoughyouwillhavetohaveatleast237argumentsaboutif,why,onwhatgroundsandwhetheryourmarchshouldbewomen-onlyornot,andwhataboutmenandwhojamaip'sboyfriend,whoisreally,reallylovelyetc.
Actually,youwillprobablyhavetohavetheseargumentsevenifyouarenotastudent.
Infact,tobehonest,ifHowtoorganiseaReclaimtheNightmarch295youareawomanworkingpoliticallywithotherwomenonwomen'srights,youwillneedtohavethesearguments;that'swhyIsaidyouwouldneedtondwomenwithtimeontheirhands.
Becausewehavetofactorinjustifyingourownmovement,aswellasorganisingourownmovement,it'saverygoodthingthatweareallsotalentedandenergetic.

Usuallythemarchesarearoundthe25thofNovember,toaddaninternationalavourandmarktheUnitedNationsInternationalDayfortheEliminationofAllFormsofViolenceAgainstWomen.
Which,bytheway,doesn'texactlyrollofthetongue,soyoumaynotwanttoputthatinfullonyouryers.
But,bewarned,itiscoldinNovember,soyoumaywanttoholdyourmarchinmidsummer,orevenrelocateyourprotesttotheSouthofFrance.

Nowyouhavearouteandpolicepermission,youneedtogetpublicitydoneandstartsnoopingaboutforformalsupporters.

Thisisbecauseyouarealiabilityuntiltheyknowyou.
IftheyformallysupportyourmarchandthenyouwalkthroughyourtowncentresmashingthewindowsofMcShite'restaurants'andsupergluingthelocksofpornshops(thoughyouandImaywellconsiderthisgood,cleanfamilyfun),theycouldgetintotrou-ble,andwouldbelikelynevertosupportyouagain.

Onceyouhaveplanssettledforyourrallyandentertainment,doanotherprintrunofyerswiththatinfohighlighted.
Thisisanattemptatattract-ingpeopletoyourmarchandisworthatry.
