Networkconvergencewillbesuccessfulonlyifthequalityoftheindividualser-vicesismaintainedinthenewnetworkenvironmentwithoutundueincreasedcosts.
Thequalityofservicedeliveryiscriticallydependentonhownetworkperformanceandavailability,asexperiencedbythetrafficflows,aremanaged.
Managingtrafficperformanceisacriticalenablerforsuccess.
Reachingthedesiredperformancelevelsrequiresadaptingprocessessuchasnetworkplanning,resourceengineering,andnetworkmonitoringtotheconvergednetworkmilieu.
ITC-20,withaconferencetheme"ManagingTrafficPerformanceinConvergedNetworks–TheInterplaybetweenConvergentandDivergentForces,"exploredtheroleofteletrafficengineeringinthebalancingactbetweenpursuingthevisionofnetworkconvergenceandstillmanagingtheperformanceofindividualservicesandlegacy-heterogeneousnetworks.
Meetingcustomerneedsinanever-increasingser-viceportfoliothatpermitspersonalizationoftheseservicesaddstothecomplexityandcostofbuildingandoperatingconvergednetworks.
Whileithasbeenarguedthatderegulationofthetelecomindustryhasresultedinimprovedcustomersatisfactionthroughwiderchoiceandcompetitivepricing,itisclearthatthissamecompetitiveenvironmentsignificantlyincreasesthechallengeofbuildingaunifiedconvergedinfrastructure.
