EffluentsweredumpedviathecreekSpittelwasserintotheriversMuldeandElbe.
Despitethefactthatthechloralkaliindustryisknownasapossiblesourceofpolychlorinatednaphthalenes(PCNs),todatenodataaboutPCNpollutionintheregionofBitterfeldanddownstreamregionsareavailable.
Therefore,sedimentsofthecreekSpittelwasserwereisomer-specificallyanalysedforpenta-,hexa-andheptachlorinatednaphthalenesusingGC/MS.
Concentrationsof880,543and1120ng/gdryweightwerefound,respectively.
TheisomerpatternsuggestschloralkaliindustryasthemajorsourceofPCNcontamination.
BecauseoftheirtoxicologicalrelevancewesuggesttoincludePCNsintomonitoringandriskassessmentprogramsoftheriversMuldeandElbedownstreamofBitterfeld.

Thefractionationmethodallowedaseparationofdifferentnonplanarandcoplanarpolychlorinatedbiphenyls(PCBs),polychlorinatednaphthalenes(PCNs),dibenzo-p-dioxins(PCDDs),anddibenzofurans(PCDFs)withdifferentdegreesofchlorination.
Thedioxin-likeactivityattheinvestigatedsitecouldbequantitativelyassignedtoPCDD/Fs.
BothPCBsandPCNscouldbeexcludedasthecauseofthemeasuredeffectsonthebasisofthefractionationprocedureandbioanalyticalresults.
Thus,themethodallowedthechemicalanalysistofocusonPCDD/Fs,withsignificantreductionoftheanalyticalexpense.
TheEROD-inductionpotencyofsediment-extractfractionswasquantified,andtoxicantswereconfirmedbytheapplicationofinductionequivalentquantitiesonthebasisoffixed-effect-levelconcentrationsthatexhibit15%ofthemaximuminductionby2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin.
Thisapproachwasdesignedtominimizemethodologicallimitationsduetosuperimposinginhibitoryeffects.
