2017Inthepastfewyears,wehavewitnessedanexplosioninthenumberofapplicationsofneuralnetworksinmachinetranslation(MT).
OneofthefundamentaldifferencesbetweentheneuralnetworkapproachesandtraditionalapproachestoMTisthewayinwhichtheydenethetranslationproblem:inneuralnetworkapproaches,thetranslationproblemisdenedinacontinuousspace,whereasintraditionalapproachesitisdenedinasymbolicspace.
Thisdifferencehasbroughtaboutgreatchangesinthisarea.
Themostobviouschangeisthenewstate-of-the-artcreatedbyneuralMT(NMT).
Butbeyondthis,manyotherchangesmayalsohaveprofoundandlong-termimpactsinthisareaandshouldnotbeovershadowed.
Inthevepapersinthisspecialissue,weareveryhappytoseethevariousaspectsofresearchbyusingneuralnetworkapproachestoMT.
Wordembeddingistherststeptoconvertthedenitionofthetranslationprob-lemfromasymbolicspacetoacontinuousspace.
Thepaper"Therepresentationalgeometryofwordmeaningsacquiredbyneuralmachinetranslationmodels"analysesthedifferencesbetweenthewordembeddingsderivedfromamonolingualcorpusandthosefromaparallelcorpusbyNMTtraining.

IntermsofthetypeofimageinformationusedinMT,thepaper"Chinese-SpanishNeuralMachineTranslationEnhancedwithCharacterandWordBitmapFonts"goesevenfurtherbyusingimagesofbitmapfontsofChinesecharactersratherthanpicturesofrealworldobjects.
IncontrasttobuildingMTsystemsunderapureneuralframework,neuralnetworkapproachescanalsobeintegratedintoatraditionalstatisticalMT(SMT)framework.
