THERMALINFORMATIONThermalProtectionThermalprotectiondisablestheoutputwhenthejunctiontemperaturerisestoapproximately+160°C,allowingthedevicetocool.
Whenthejunctiontemperaturecoolstoapproximately+140°Ctheoutputcircuitryisagainenabled.
Dependingonpowerdissipation,thermalresistance,andambienttemperature,thethermalprotectioncircuitmaycycleonandoff.
Thiscyclinglimitsthedissipationoftheregulator,protectingitfromdamagebecauseofoverheating.
Anytendencytoactivatethethermalprotectioncircuitindicatesexcessivepowerdissipationoraninadequateheatsink.
Forreliableoperation,junctiontemperatureshouldbelimitedto+125°Cmaximum.
Toestimatethemarginofsafetyinacompletedesign(includingheatsink),increasetheambienttemperatureuntilthethermalprotectionistriggered;useworst-caseloadsandsignalconditions.
Forgoodreliability,thermalprotectionshouldtriggeratleast+35°Cabovethemaximumexpectedambientconditionofyourparticularapplication.
Thisconfigurationproducesaworst-casejunctiontemperatureof+125°Catthehighestexpectedambienttemperatureandworst-caseload.
