Itmainlybenefitslarge-scaleproducersandtraders.

TheESCWAanalysisisinterestinginthatitillustratesthedangeroftreatingtheArabworldasahomogeneousregion.
TheESCWAcalculationsshowthattheagriculturalpotentialvariesconsiderablybetweenthedifferentArabnations,andasaresult,appropriatefoodsecuritystrategiesarelikelytovary–domesticgrainproductionwaseconomicallyefficientinEgypt,Syria,andPalestinebutnotinJordanandLebanon.

Inaddition,globalmarketsarethin,andAsiangovernmentsareunwillingtoallowdomesticpriceincreasesleadingtodistortionaryinterventionsinmarkets.
Thesefeaturesofthericemarketmakericepricesparticularlyvolatile.
Whereastradeshocks(exportrestrictionsanddemandsurges)areestimatedtohavecausedmostoftheincreaseinriceprices,thesefactorswerelessimportantinothergrainmarketswherelessofthedominantexportersimposedrestrictions–exportrestrictionsanddemandsurgesareestimatedtoberesponsibleforjustoverhalfofthe72percentpriceriseinwheat(Headey2010).

AspointedoutbyFritschel(2011),theseexportbansareperfectlylegalbecausecurrenttradearrangementsallowcountriestorestrictexportsintheeventof'criticalshortagesoffoodstuffs'.
SomeanalystsarguethattheWTODohaRoundoftradenegotiationsshouldbereopenedandpressureexertedtoabolishexportbans.
Othersarguethatthisisnotviableandthatthewayforwardistoraiseglobalfoodproductionandimprovereservestocksinindi-vidualcountries.

TheLogisticsPerformanceIndex(LPI)isbasedonaworldwidesurveyofoperatorsontheground(globalfreightforwardersandexpresscarriers),whoprovidefeedbackonthelogistics'friendliness'ofthecountriesinwhichtheyoperateandthosewithwhichtheytrade.
Theycombinein-depthknowledgeofthecountriesinwhichtheyoperatewithinformedqualitativeassessmentsofothercountrieswithwhichtheytradeandexperienceofgloballogisticsenvironment.
Feedbackfromoperatorsissupplementedwithquantitativedataontheperformanceofkeycomponentsofthelogisticschaininthecountryofwork.
TheLPIconsiststhereforeofbothqualitativeandquantitativemeasuresandhelpsbuildprofilesoflogisticsfriendlinessforthesecountries.
Itmeas-uresperformancealongthelogisticssupplychainwithinacountryandofferstwodifferentperspectives:internationalanddomestic.
