HoerberDescriptionThecourseonNano‐OpticswillprovideanunderstandingoftheproblemstraditionalElectrodynamicsisfacingwheninteractionsbetweenradiationandmatterbecomelocalizedfarbelowthewavelengthoftheradiationinvolved.
Thepathfollowedinaseriesoflectureswillbealongtheoldparticle‐wavediscussion,whichendedafterHuygenswiththegreatsuccessforthewavedescriptionoflighthelpingindevelopingalargearrayofopticalinstruments.
In1902Lenardobservedthattheenergyofelectronsreleasedinanionisationprocessinducedbyradiationisproportionaltothefrequencyoftheradiationandnottotheintensity,asMaxwell'swavetheoryoflightpredicted.
ThisproblemwassolvedbyEinsteinwiththereintroductionofparticlesoflightcalledphotonsandthisleadtothedevelopmentofQuantum‐Mechanicsinthe20tiestcenturywithitsconceptofwave‐particledualismanditsstatisticalinterpretationoflightinteractionswithmatter.
Withtheimprovementofdetectorsandlightsourcesinthelast20yearsexperimentstomeasuretheinteractionofsinglephotonswithsinglenano‐structuresbecamepossible,forwhichtheCopenhagen‐InterpretationofQuantum‐Mechanicsdoesnotprovideareallysatisfyingphysicaldescription.
Forthedevelopmentofnewcommunicationtechnologiesabroadinvestigationintotheinteractionbetweenlightandnano‐structureshasstarted.
