WelaunchedinJune2012andhavespentthelastsevenmonthsbuildingtheEditorialBoard(whichnownumberssome800academics)andthesubmission,peerreview,andpublicationsoftware,fromscratch.
WehavebeenopenforsubmissionssinceearlyDecember2012,andweexpecttopublishourrstarticlessometimeinmid-February2013.
PeerJdrewconsiderableattentionwhenitlaunched,andanoverviewofsomeofthecoveragecanbefoundathttps://peerj.
com/about/reviews/.
ClearlythebackgroundoftheFounders,aswellasthenancialbackers(O'ReillyMedia,andOATV,bothbackedbyTimO'Reilly)generatedsomeinterest,butultimatelytherealattentionwasonthingslikeourbusinessmodelandproductofferings,andthesearetheaspectsthatIwasaskedtoexpandonaftertheannualmeeting.

willhavetwopublications—apreprintservercalledPeerJPrePrintsandaformallypeer-reviewedOpenAccessjournalcalledPeerJ,bothofwhichwillpublishacrossthewholerangeoftheBiologicalandMedicalSciences.
PeerJisajournalwhichreviewscontentonlyforscienticandmethodologicalsoundness,asisdoneatPLOSONEforexample.
ThemainwayinwhichwedifferfrommostOpenAccesspublicationsisviaourbusinessmodel.
MostOApublicationschargeanarticleprocessingfeeforeacharticletheypublish.
Bycontrast,PeerJoffersresearchersalifetimemembership,forasinglelowprice,givingthemtheabilitytopublishfuturearticleswithusforfree.
Thereforethebusinessmodelismovedfromoneinwhichauthorshavetopayforeverypublication,tooneinwhichauthorspayforapersonalmembershipgivingthemlifetimepublicationrights.
AllauthorsonaPeerJpapermusthavea"paidMembership"andtherearethreeMembershiptiers,eachconferringdifferentrights.
Thethreetiersare:Basicat$99(whichallowsaMembertopublishonearticleperyear,inPeerJ,forlife);Enhancedat$199(whichallowsaMembertopublishtwoarticlesperyear,inPeerJ,forlife);andInvestigatorat$299(whichallowsaMembertopublishanunlimitednumberofarticlesperyear,inPeerJ,forlife).

Weunderstandthatndingpeoplewhoarewillingtopeer-reviewarticlesisincreasinglyhard,thereforewearetryingtoencouragepeopletoparticipate,atsomelevel,byrequiringeachpayingmembertoprovideone"review"peryearorrisktheirmembershiplapsing.
Forthisrequirement,though,areviewcanbeassimpleasacommentonaPeerJPrePrintsarticleoronapublishedPeerJarticle,oritcanbeassubstantialasaformallyinvitedpre-publicationreviewonafullsubmissiontoPeerJ.
However,thebusinessmodelisonlyourmostvisibledifferentiator—wewilldifferinotherwaystoo.
Forexample,unlikemostpublisherswearegoingtofocusonjustonejournal.
Thismeanswecandevoteourresourcesinatargetedway,concentrateonwhatisimportant,andmakethatonejournalasgoodasitcanpossiblybe.
Andofcoursethepreprintserverisunusualcomparedtomostpublishers.
Thecombinationofthesetwopublicationswillmeanthatanauthorcanhaveawell-rounded,endtoend,publishingexperiencewithus.
WewillalsobeencouragingOpenPeerReview—specicallywewillencouragereviewerstoidentifythemselvestoauthorsandwewillgiveauthorstheoptionofpublishingtheirfullpeerreviewhistoryalongsidetheirpublishedarticle.
ThispracticehasbeensuccessfullyemployedbyTheEMBOJournal,forexample(EMBOdiscussedtheirtransparentpeerreviewprocessintheNovember2012issueofEON),andwehopethatitwillencourageanopenandconstructivereviewprocess.

Itiscloseenoughtoestablishedpublicationmodelsthatauthorscanfeelcomfortablewithit,yetinnovativeinmanykeyrespects(thebusinessmodel;theincentivesbuiltintothesystem;theopenpeerreview;thepreprintserverandsoon).
AstothefutureofOpenAccess,IamonrecordpredictingthatOpenAccessisrapidlydisruptingthesubscriptionmodel,andthatverysoonitwillbecomethewayinwhichthemajorityofscholarlycontentispublished.
WhydoIthinkthatArecentstudybyLaaksoandBjork(http://www.

com/1741-7015/10/124)reportedthat"immediateavailability"OpenAccesscontentmadeupapproximately11.
6%ofallarticlesindexedbyScopusin2011,andthatthisnumberisrisingatapproximately1%peryear.
Clearlythisisasomewhatlowpercentage,withapparentlyslowgrowth;however,thesamearticlereportsa16.
9%proportionofOAifyouinclude"delayed"OA—whichisstartingtolookalittlemoresignicant.
SowhatdoesthissayaboutthefuturegrowthofOADavidLewisrecentlypublishedanarticleinACRLARTICLEPeerJ–anewstartupintheOpenAccessspacecalled"TheInevitabilityofOpenAccess"(http://crl.

Ittakesawhileforajournaltobecomeestablished(ithastakenPLOSONEsomesevenyearstogettoitspresentsize,whichisanimpressive23,500publishedarticlesin2012alone)andsomymessageisthatpublishersneedtostartadaptingnowiftheywanttoremainaviablepublicationvenueinthenearfuture.
Ofcourse,webelievethatPeerJwillrepresentsuchavenue,butwefullyexpecttoseeotherinnovativeanddynamicdevelopmentsinthisspaceinthenextfewyears.

Inearly2010,wejoinedwiththeveotherbigevolutionjournalsinadoptingthe"JointDataArchivingPolicy,"whichmandatesthat"authorsmakeallthedatarequiredtorecreatetheresultsintheirpaperavailableonapublicarchive.
"ThispolicycameintoforceinJanuary2011,andsinceallvejournalsbroughtitinatthesametimeitmeantthatnoonejournalsufferedtheeffectsofbringingina(potentially)unpopularpolicy.
Tohelpusseewhetherauthorsreallyhadarchivedalltherequireddatasets,westartedrequiringthatauthorsincludea"DataAccessibility"(DA)sectioninthenalversionoftheirmanuscript.
ThisDAsectionlistswhereeachdatasetisstored,andnormallyappearsafterthereferences.

BeingstrictaboutthismakesmostauthorsdealwithourDArequirementsquickly(theydon'twanttheirpaperdelayed),butafewtakelongerwhilewehelpauthorsworkoutwhatwewant.
ThedownsideofthiswholeapproachisthatittakesmequitealotofefforttoworkoutwhatshouldappearintheDAsection,andwouldbeimpossibleinajournalwhereanacademicdoesnotseethenalversionofthepaper.
Amorerobustlong-termstrategyhastoinvolvetheresearchercommunityinidentifyingwhichdatashouldbearchived.

Iexpectthatthisproportionwillbemorelike80%intwoyears,asthisseemstobehowlongittakestoeffectchangesinauthororreviewerbehavior.
Sincethenegrainofthedetailsmaybeofinterest,I'vebrokendowntheindividualstepsbelow:1)Theauthorssubmittheirpaperwithadraft"DataAccessibility"(DA)statementinthemanuscript;thislistswheretheauthorsplantoarchiveeachoftheirdatasets.
We'veincludedarequiredcheckboxinthesubmissionphasethatstates"AdraftDataAccessibilitystatementispresentinthemanuscript.
"2)ResearchpaperssubmittedwithoutaDAsectionareheldintheeditorialofcechecklistandtheauthorscontactedtorequestone.
