Youshouldattempttodeterminethepointatwhichthisoccurs.
WhentheBandGaincontrolsarefullydown,maximumprocessingoccursforanygivenLevelsetting,thusmakingidentificationofthenoiseeasier.

YouwillusetheBandGaincontrolstocontroltheamountofnoiseattenuationperformedineachband,adjustingthemtosuppressasmuchnoiseaspossiblewithoutintroducingunwantedartefactsintothedesiredsignal.
Noisesuppressionoccursinagivenbandwhenthefaderisbelow0dB.
However,thereareoccasionswhenyoumightwishtoboostthesignalinagivenband,andyoucandothisbymovingtheappropriatefaderabove0dB.

Ifyoursignalexhibitsanyoftheseproblems,youcansuppressthemasfollows.
First,identifythefrequencyrange(s)inwhichthenoiselies.
Youshouldbeabletodothisbylisteningtotheproblem.
However,ifthisprovesdifficult,youcanusethefollowingmethod.
Itisnotimportantthatyoufindtheperfectsettingsatthefirstattempt.
Inparticular,youwillbeabletorefineyourLevelandBandGainsettingsonceyouhavefoundthecorrectrange.
Beginasfollows:EnsurethattheDNSOneisnotinBypassSelectFullRangeSetallsixBandGaincontrolsto-24dBMovetheLevelcontrolto-80andthenraiseituntilthenoisedisappearsAtthispointyouhavedeterminedanapproximatesettingfortheLevel.
Thisisnecessaryfordeterminingtherangebutitislikelythatyouwillrefinethislaterintheprocedure.

Inthiscase,Low+Midwillbethecorrectchoice.
Second,optimisetheLevelcontrol.
Listeningcarefullytotheaudio,refinetheLevelsettingsothatthenoiseiscorrectlyidentifiedwithoutintroducingaudibleartefacts.
Ifthisprovesdifficult,youcanreturntheBandGaincontrolsto-24dBforthisstage.
TheDNSOnetakesashortperiodtosettleaftermovingtheLevelcontrol(especiallyinthelowerranges)soyoushouldnotadjustitrapidly.
-13-Third,refinetheBandGaincontrolsforoptimumsuppression.
SetallsixBandGaincontrolsto0dB.
Nowincreaseanddecreasethegainineachbandseparatelywhilelisteningtotheeffectthateachhasonthenoise.
Thiswillidentifythebandsthatcontainthemajorityofthenoise.
(Donotbealarmedifallsixbandscontainsignificantnoise.
Thisisnotunusual.
)Let'sassumethatthegreatestimprovementoccurswhenyoureducethegaininbands3and4.
Thissuggeststhatthenoiseisconcentratedinanapproximaterangeof200Hzto1kHz.
Youshouldnowfindtheoptimumpositionsforallsixfaders.
Thegreatestcutswilllieinbands3and4,whereasbands1,2,5and6shouldremainascloseto0dBaspossibletoensurethatminimalsignaldamageoccursinthebandsthatdonotcontainmuchnoise.
Thefinalconfigurationmightlooklikethis:-14-Case2:SuppressingtapehissDNSOnecansuppressthetapehissthatmarsmanyolderrecordings.
Itwillalsoimprovethesignal/noiseratioofdialoguetapesthathavebeenpoorlycopiedaswellasthosethatareseveralgenerationsold.
First,identifythefrequencyrange(s)inwhichthenoiselies.
Youshouldfollowtheprocedurelaiddowninthepreviousexampletodeterminetherange(s)inwhichtheproblemlies.
Formostinstancesoftapehiss,youwillfindthattheMid+Highrangesaremostappropriate.
InafewcasesyoumayfindthattheHighrangealoneismostsuitable.
ItisnotascommontorequiresuppressionintheLowrangebecausehissisusuallylessprominentatlowerfrequencies,anditmayalsobemaskedbythegenuineaudiointherange.
Second,optimisetheLevelcontrol.
TodeterminethecorrectLevel,youshouldagainfollowtheproceduredescribedpreviously.
Third,refinetheBandGaincontrolsforoptimumsuppression.
Asinthefirsttutorialexample,youshouldstartwithallsixBandGaincontrolsat0dB.
Youshouldthenincreaseanddecreaseeachcontrolindividuallytofindthebandsthatcontributemosthisstothesignal.
BecausetapehissoftenexhibitsawhiteprofileatMidandHighfrequencies,youmayfindthatsatisfactoryresultsareachievedwiththeBandGaincontrolssetinahorizontalline.
However,hissisgenerallylessannoyingatveryhighaudiofrequencies.
Consequently,youmaybeabletoreducetheamountofprocessingintheuppermostbands.
Thiswillhelptoensurethatanylowamplitudesignalcomponentslyingathighfrequencies(whichprovidemuchofthe'air','ambience'or'life'inasignal)arepassedwithlittleornoattenuation.
Thefinalconfigurationmightlooklikethis:-15-Case3:SuppressingexcessivereverberationInmanysituations,theDNSOnecansuppressexcessivereverberation.
ThiscanbeusefulinTVproductionwhenyouneedtomatchtheaudiofromalargerecordingstudioorsoundstagetovisualimagessetinasmallroomorotherenclosedspace.
Suppressingreverberationcanalsobebeneficialinincreasingtheintelligibilityofpoordialoguerecordings.
Themethodusedtosuppressreverberationisquitedifferentfromthatappliedinthepreviousexamples,andisasfollows:First,settherangeinwhichthereverberationlies.
Ingeneral,reverberantspacesincludesoftmaterialsthatabsorbhighfrequenciesmorerapidlythanmiddleandlowerfrequencies.
Evenbareroomswithhardwallsincludethesesoftmaterials:theyarethepeoplewhoarespeaking.
Consequently,youwillfindthatLow+Midisalmostalwaysthemostappropriatecombinationofrangesforsuppressingreverberation.
Second,settheBandGaincontrols.
YoushouldsetallsixBandGaincontrolsto-24dB.
Thiswillensurethat(iftheLevelissetcorrectly)DNSOneappliesmaximumsuppressiontothetailsofthesound.
Third,optimisetheLevelcontrol.
Startingatitsminimumposition(-80dB)increasetheLevelcontrolslowly.
Atsomepointbeforefullnoisesuppressionbecomesapparent,youwillhearthetailsofloudersoundsbecometruncated.
YoucanadjusttheamountoftruncationofthereverbusingtheLevelcontrolratherthantheBandGaincontrols.
