Everyeventwasfabulousbuttherehavebeenafewstand-outmomentsforme.
FirstofallthejudgingdayfortheWE50wassimplyastounding;thequalityandquantityofnominationsforbothcurrentandformerapprenticeswerebreath-takingandmadechoosingthefinal50incrediblydifficult!
PresentingtheawardsattheAfternoonTeawasarealprivilegeanditwassogreattoseethedetailandrecognitionoftheirachievementsinTheGuardiansupplement.
AroundouractualcentenarydayandINWEDwereceivedsomeamazingcoveragewithagreatpieceinTheTelegraph;andslotsonBBCBreakfastandSkyNewstoboot!
However,ImustconfessthatofthefranticactivitiesofthelastfewmonthsmyfavouritehastobethesublimecelebrationlunchthatGrazynaWhapshottkindlyorganisedatthePolishClubinLondononthedayofourcentenary(seepage6).
ThevenuewasbeautifulanditwassonostalgicandinspiringtorememberandheartributestothemanyamazingwomenwhocreatedWESorhavebeeninstrumentalintheSocietyovertheyears.

DawnChildsMAMDABEngCEngFICEFIMechEFRAeSFWESthewomanengineer-autumn20193CentenaryToday,womenstillonlymakeupabout12percentoftheprofessionalengineeringworkforceintheUK,afactthattheWomen'sEngineeringSocietywantstochange.
AspartoftheWESCentenaryTrail(aNationalLotteryHeritagefundedproject)duringitscentenaryyear,WEShaschosentocelebratethelivesofmanyofitspast,distinguishedmembersandothernotablewomenengineersintheUKandbeyond.
Byrediscoveringandpromotingtheachievementsofsomeofourpreviousmembersthroughoutouronehundredyearhistory,WESisaimingtoincreasepublicawarenessofwomen'srolesinthehistoryofengineering,aswellasprovidingrolemodelsforfuturegenerationsofwomenengineersandwiderSTEMcareers.
On23June2019,exactlyonehundredyearsafterWES'foundation,theinteractiveCentenaryTrailMapwaslaunchedatwww.

The2019awardsattractedalargenumberofhigh-qualitynominationsfromabroadrangeofindustries.
The50winnersand'highlycommended'nomineescamefrommanydifferentsectorsincludingprofessionalservices,pharmaceutical,aerospace,facilitiesmanagementandautomotive.
Speakingabouttheinitiative,WESPresidentDawnChildssaid:"SincetheinceptionoftheTop50WomeninEngineeringlistin2016,WEShasbeenprivilegedtobeabletoidentify,andthushelpshowcase,someamazingwomeninengineering.

Bornin1896HildaLyongraduatedwithamathsdegreeattheendofthefirstworldwarandwentstraightintotheaeronauticalindustry.
Shebecamearenownedspecialistinstructuralanalysis,workingonthedesignoftheR101airshipandmanyaeroplanes,aswellasbecominganexpertinstreamlining.
ShewasanactivememberofWESandgaveatalktothesocietyinwhichshedescribedherworkandlifeasan"adventureinaeronauticaldesign".
Sadly,shediedprematurelyattheageof50butwaswarmlyrememberedbycolleaguesasameticulousengineerwhowouldhaveachievedevenmorehadshelivedlonger.
Theplaquewasinstalledonthewallofthefamily'sformershopinMarketWeighton,EastYorkshireinthepresenceofthefamilyfromYorkshire,theUSAandAustralia,localresidentsandengineeringhistorianNinaBakerwhohadcampaignedforHildatoberecognisedinthismanner.
AcaptiveaudienceTheUK'smajorsubcontractingshowSubcon(4-6June2019)andTheEngineeringExporecognisedtheWESCentenarybydedicatingtheconferencesessionsinTheEngineerConferenceonthemorningof6JunetotheneedtoimproveUKengineering'sgenderbalance.
ThecontentofthepresentationswascuratedbyWES.

DrGardnertalkedaboutbiasandAIandfocusedondataqualityoverdataquantity.
HertalkcommencedbygivingexamplesofbiasintechnologyandAI,shethentalkedabouthowlackofdiversityresultedinbuildingbiasintoalgorithmsthatthenperformdiscrimination.

BothWESandthesitearecelebratingsignificantbirthdaysthisyear;WEScelebrateditscentenaryinJune,andthesitecelebratedits130thbirthday.
ThesitewasfoundedbyCharlesParsons,andhiswifeLadyKatherineanddaughterRachelwereamongthefoundingmembersofWES,withRachelbeingthefirstPresident.
Duringtheevent,attendeesheardfromDrJoDouglas-Harris,WESTrustee,aboutWESandhowtheycouldgetinvolved,andfromtheSiemensMDDarrenDavidsonregardingthehistoryofthesiteandthepresentdayactivities.
GuestspeakerMeshiTakaCEngtalkedabouttheimportanceofdiversityandinclusionintheworkplace,andSiemensQualityEngineerRuthBalderserainformedtheaudienceabouttheinterestinglivesofbothLadyKatherineandRachelParsons.
TheeventconcludedwithRuthandRachelNoonan,ProjectImplementationEngineeratSiemens,discussingtheirroutesintheworldofengineering,andwhetheranythinghadchangedinthe25yearsseparatingtheirentryintotheengineeringworkforce.

ThesecondsessionwasdeliveredbySallySudworthwhohasover30years'experienceofworkingindesignandconstructioninboththeprivateindustryandpublicsector.
Forthisevent,Sallyranatastersessionthatintroducedtechniquesonhowtobreakthemouldthatarefrequentlyputuponwomenworkingwithinamaledominatedindustry.
Thetastersessionstartedwithaskingattendeestoidentifytheirrecentproudachievementtoacknowledgetheirhardwork.
Next,Sallyencouragedattendeestothinkaheadtotheirnextpotentialgoal.
Sheurgedattendeestothinkabouttheirmentorsorotherco-workersaroundthemwhomightbeabletohelpinachievingtheirnextgoal.
Thispracticeaimedtocreateaclearpathandvisiontoachieveattendees'setgoals,hencemanagingworkrelatedstressandwork-lifebalance.
Allsessionswerewellattendedandwerewarmlyreceived,andattendees'feedbackwasverypositivewithcommentsthatthesessionswereverywellorganised,andthatthespeakerscomplementedeachother.
Theeventencompassedthethemeof'past,presentandfuture'byenlighteningattendeesaboutthelesserknownhistoryofwomeninengineering,informingonthelatestdevelopmentsintheprofessionandprovidingtoolstothinkcreativelyaboutandplanforthefuture.

Themeanaveragesalaryforprofessionallyregisteredrespondentsis55,968,comparedto45,809amongstthosewhoarenotprofessionallyregistered.
Thissalarydifferencecanbeseenacrossallsectorsofengineeringandateverycareerlevelbeyondgraduatetrainee/apprentice,wheresalariesappearconsistent.
Inachangefrom2018,thebiggestsalarydifferencewasforengineersworkinginthetelecommsandutilitiesandelectronicssectors,whereprofessionalregistrationsawanaveragedifferenceofalmost18,000.
Thedifferencewasalsopronouncedintheenergy/renewableandnuclearsectors,witha13,000differencebetweenregisteredandnon-registeredrespondents.
