StufftheBusisacollaborativeeffortbetweentheKiwanisClub,localbusinesses,andindividualswhorealizetheimportanceofmakingsurethateverychildhasthebasicschoolsuppliesneededtostartclasses.
Withmorethan55percentofPolkCountystudentslivingatorbelowthepovertylevel,thesesuppliesareawelcomedrelieftoadministratorsandteachersinourlocalelementaryschools.
Withthesupportofthecommunity,TheKiwanisClubofWinterHavencollectedandpurchasedover$34,600.

ClubmembersweresetupintheparkinglotsoftheWinterHavenSuperWal-MartanddowntownStaplescollectingdonationsandsuppliesfromareashoppersonSaturday,August9th.
CollectionboxeswereplacedthroughoutthebusinesscommunityinJulytoencouragecustomersandemployeestodonatetheneededschoolsupplies.
AllthecollectionboxeswerepickedupbyFriday,August8th,andontheeveningofAugust11th,allthesupplieswerecountedandsortedfordeliverythenextday.
Thirty-fiveKiwaniansworked400man-hoursadvertising,collecting,pur-chasing,counting,sorting,anddeliveringschoolsuppliesforourStufftheBuscampaign.
Inaddition,othervolunteersprovided24man-hoursinsupportofthisproject.
Wecollected$10,000.

Thefocusofthisprojectistocollectnewtennisshoesfor"thechildreninneed"intheCharlotteCountyPublicSchoolSys-temforthestartoftheacademicschoolyear.
Thereare20schoolsinvolvedintheproject;whichincludesthepre-Kcenter,alloftheelementary,middle,andhighschools.
Thisyearthememberscollected3300newpairsofsneakersforthestudentsintheCharlotteCountyPublicSchoolSystem;whichmakesthefouryearsuminexcessof13,000pairsofnewtennisshoes.
Asseeninthisphotothechildrenarevery,veryexcitedtoreceivetheirnewsneakersforthebeginningoftheschoolyear.
Asamatteroffact,manyoftheparentsarenowfamiliarwiththeprojectandwillbringtheirsonordaughtertotheschoolinearlyAugustbeforetheschoolyearactuallybegins,sothattheytrulystartofftheschoolyearoffontherightfoot!

LearningInTheSunSubmittedbyRichardWongsam,DistrictChair,EducationOverthelastthreesummers,theSawgrassSunriseKiwanisClubhastaken30to40innercitychildrenandtriedtoexposethemtonon-traditionalactivities.
Initially,thechildrenweregivenlessonsinfinance,geographyanddeportment.
ThechildrenarefedbreakfastandluncheachSaturdaywhiletheyareparticipatingintheprogram.
TheKiwanianshavetakenthechildrentotheTennisclubandhadtennisprofessionalsgivethemahalfdayoftennislessonsandhands-onplaying.
Thesetennisprosalsodemonstratedthetennisscoringsystembyplayingagamewiththechildrenasspectators.
Thispro-gramhasbeenverysuccessfulasmanyoftheparticipantshavestartedtoplaytennis.
OtherweeklyactivitieshaveincludedsoccertrainingwithFIFAqualifiedtrainersandclubmemberswhohaveplayedthegameonahighlevel.
AnotherprogramwasBeachVolleyballatthelocalcommunitycourts.
Thisactivitywaswellreceivedandthechildrenreallyhadagreattimelearningthepropermethodsandrulesofthegame,especiallywiththenumberofgamesbeingbroadcastfromtheOlympics.
Thisyear,theclubaddedAgriculturetotheirprogrambyacquiringaplotoflandandtakingthechildrenthereandhavingthemplantvariousvegetablesandfruits.
Thechildrenreallyhadablastdiggingandplantingtheseedsandsmallstarterplants.
Overtheweeksoftheprogram,theplantsmaturedandcantaloupes,eggplants,peppersandothervegetableswerereaped.
SomeofthesefruitsandvegetablesweredisplayedataclubmeetingforallClubmemberstosee.
Thewinnersofthebestplantsandveg-etableswillbeawardedwithcashprizes.
Theprogramendedwithabigcookoutandparticipantswerepresentedwithgiftandprizes.
Fivechildrenwereawardedwithabeginningsavingsaccountthatwillbemonitoredandmatchingfundswillbeprovidedformoneysavedbyeachchild.
