Ifthis isyourfirst time competing in a CodeJam event  take a lookatourQuick-StartGuide to learn the basicsof the CodeJam platformand howto compete。

TheAPACTestconsists of fouronl ine rounds in which studentscan chooseto participate.The fouronl ine rounds wi l l take place onAugust 18 September15  October13 and November10  2014.Find the schedule.You mayparticipate in anyround  oranycombination of rounds. In each round  participants wi l l receivescores for providing answers to a series of coding problems.After

each round  some of the highest-scoring participants may beinvited to interviewatGoogle。

What programming languagescanI useto solvethe problems?

You can use pretty much any programming language orlanguages you l ike  withthe provisothat the compi lerorinterpreterfor the languageyou used is freelyavai lable.See theTerms for the detai ls.Some specificthings worth mentioning:VisualStudio is acceptable  because of Visual Studio Express. Likewisewith MATLAB  because of open-source versions l ike Octave.Interpreters and compi lers that require you to have Windows or MacOSXinstal led are acceptable(if theyaren'tunacceptableforanotherreason).Time-l imited trials of compi lers and interpreters thatcost

money are not acceptable.Maple and Mathematicaare non-freeand notacceptable。

What developmentenvironments can I use?

You can use anydevelopmentenvironment or texteditor including those thatcostmoney.Bear in mind that the programminglanguage you use must have a free compi leror interpreter。

Looking ataproblem does notstart anytimers  so you can read al l of them atthe start and solve them in the orderof yourchoice.There aredifferentpointvalues foreach input in each problem and wegeneral lygive lowerpointvalues to the questions wethinkare theeasiest。

The". in" fi les are simplytextfi les.You are required to write aprogram that takes the textfrom the.in fi le as input and producessome output (as defined bythe problem statement). If youwouldl iketolookinsidethe.infi le  youcanopenit inatexteditor.Wordpad and Notepad++wi l l work  as wi l l anyothereditor thatunderstands UNIXendl ines.Warning:Notepad wi l l general lydisplay.in fi les incorrectly。

What are the requirements for uploading source code fi les?

You mustupload al l of yourcodein additionto any non-standard l ibrariesyou used to solve each Input/Outputset.

Uploading source codefi les larger than 100kB is not al lowed.Youmayupload aZIParchivecontaining multiplefi les  as long as theirtotal uncompressed size does notexceed 1MB. If you use a standardl ibrarythat's avai lable ontheInternet  and it's too largetoupload puta comment inyoursourcecodeexplaining where thel ibraryis avai lable。

What if I solvea problem by hand?

Forsubmissions to LargeInput/Outputsets  onlyyourmost recentsubmission wi l l be avai lable.You canonlydownload youroutputand source code if you have submittedthem。

Deal ing with 502 Errors

What isa 502 error?

We have recently received reports that a smal l fraction ofcontestants received these errorswhenthey tried to submit theiroutput.A502error isanindicationthatyoursubmissiondidn'tgetto Google's servers  or arrived atourservers malformed.This canbe caused by an incorrectly-configured proxy.Al l of our reports sofar have come from China。

What shouldIdoif Igota 502error?

Try submitting from a different browser. If that doesn't work trycompetingfrom That'sjustan al ias for butusing itcansolvetheproblem. If that doesn't work you' l l have to investigate your proxysettings。

Because programming problems often require very preciselanguage  the riskof mistranslating a problem is too great  andthe consequences are very severe: a single wrong word can give avery real disadvantage or advantage to contestants reading it.Becauseof this  we'vedecided not to makethe problemsavai lablein more thanone language.You may use the mechanical translatorof yourchoice.Talking about the problemswithotherpeople  eventranslators  is not al lowed。
