Ifobserverstrackdotsserially,thentheasynchronousconditionshouldyieldsuperiorperformancesincefewerdotsmovesimultaneously.
Conversely,astandardparallelaccountpredictscomparableperformanceinthetwoconditions.
Surprisingly,wefoundthatperformancewasactuallybetterinthesynchronousconditionthanintheasynchronouscondition,disconfirmingaserialaccount.
Wespeculatethatthemotiononsettransientsintheasynchronousconditioninvoluntarilyswitchedattentionbetweendots,therebydisruptingtheparalleltrackingmechanism.
Thereisevidencethattrackingoccursindependentlyineachcerebralhemisphere(Alvarez&Cavanagh,2005,PsychologicalScience,16,637).
Whilethismightexplainwhydotsindifferentvisualhemifieldscanbetrackedinparallel,whenweconfinedallthedotstojustonevisualhemifield,performancewasstillgreatestinthesynchronouscondition.
Infact,whenallthedotswereconfinedtojustonequadrant,performancewasstillinconsistentwithaserialaccount.
