Greatcarewastakennottomakethisconferencea"European"oreven"Austrian"one.
Wearehappyandproudtohearthatthese"EuropeanMeetings"(thenameisapurelytraditionalone)arerecognizedastheinternationallyleadingconferencesincyberneticsandsystemsresearch.
Importantscientistsfromallovertheworldcarefullypreparetheirpapers,containingtheirmostrecentresearchfindings,andthenenjoythediscussionswiththeirco11eagues.
Theconferencewasovershadowedbytheseverelossoftwocolleagueswhohadcooperatedfromthebeginningin1972:ProfessorFrancisdePaulaHanikaandMr.

Hanika,justhavingretiredin1970fromhispositionasprofessorformanagementscience,encouragedtheAustrianSocietyforCyberneticStudiestoorganizethefirstEuropeanMeetingonCyberneticsandSystemsResearch.
Or,tobemoreprecise,hewasthedrivingforcethroughallourmeetingsand,eventhoughhepulledalittlebitbackwhenhereachedhis80ies,hestillwasthegrandoldmanbehindthescenewhoweturnedtowheneverweneededadviceorencouragement.
Itwillbeverydifficultforustofindareplacementforhim,notonlyinhiscapacityaslong-termchairmanofthesymposiaoncyberneticsoforganizationandmanagementoftheMeetings(thisEighthMeetingwasthefirstwithoutit),butalsoasafriendandadvisor.
