A72-year-old Oklahoma grandmother is preparing to becomeone of the oldest US mi l itarystaff to go toIraq。

Lena Haddix from Lawton  a mi l itary wife for nearly 30yea says she volunteered for the Iraq mission。

"Iwanted to do something forthe country because Iwasalways left behind taking care of the chi ldren "Ms Haddix said。

Herfive chi ldren  eightgrandchi ldren and three great-grandchi ldren al l discouraged herbut to no avai l。

"Ijustsee so many of the boys.They're l ike l ittle kids.They keeptel l ing me 'I'mgoing over. Iwouldjust l iketogooverand bewiththem.

Ms Haddix wi l l be working forthe Departmentof Defee's Armyand AirForce Exchange(AAFE)which operates shops sel l ing goodsto US mi l itarypeonnel on armybases。

The Exchangeopened its fitstore inIraq inApri l 2003 and MsHaddix has alreadyworked for them elsewhere。

JuddAteyof theAAFEsaid Ms Haddixwas anextraordinarycharacter。

"She is avibrant individual  one-of-a-kind.She has acommitment that rufrom Oklahomato Baghdad  " hesaid。

Ms Haddix hasjustone medical test to pass before she ismobi l ised。

She is expected to arrive in Iraq where AAFE have 30 shops within a month。

"I'm surethere wi l l betimeswhen I' l l bescared  but I'm notnow " she said。
