RenaissancescholarsdidnotjuststudyancientGreeceandRomeashistory,theygraduallyabsorbedthoughtsandvaluesembodiedinclassicaltextsandcivilizations.

Thepopularverseform"sonnet,"forexample,is14-linelyricpoemofiambicpentameter,withaspecialrhymeof"ababababcdecde".

HeissometimescreditedasthefounderofcolonyofVirginiainAmericaandasthefirstpersontointroducetobaccotoEurope.
HehadenjoyedgreatfavourfromQueenElizabethI,butafterthequeen'sdeathandtheaccessionofKingJamesI,hewaschargedwithhightreasonandwasthrownintoprison(theTowerofLondon)in1603.
Duringthe13yearsinprison,hewrotetheHistoryoftheWorld.
In1617,hewasreleasedtosearchforthegoldminewhichheclaimedtohavediscoveredinGuianaonhisearlierexpedition25yearsbefore.
Thisexpeditionwasadisastrousone:hissonwaskilledandhischieflieutenantcommittedsuicide.
