Facebookmovestohelporgandonations1May2012,byRobLeverFacebookonTuesdayunveiledaninitiativetousethevastsocialnetworktohelpconnectorgandonorswithpeoplewhoneedlife-savingtransplants.
FacebookfounderMarkZuckerbergannouncedtheinitiativeandbecameoneofthefirstFacebookuserstosignuptodonateonthesocialnetwork.
MembersofFacebookintheUnitedStatesandBritaincannowindicatethattheyareorgandonorsontheirtimelines,andiftheyarenotdonors,theycanfindlinkstoofficialorgandonationregistriesandinstantlyenroll.
"Facebookisreallyaboutcommunicatingandtellingstories,"ZuckerbergtoldABCNews.
"Wethinkthatpeoplecanreallyhelpspreadawarenessoforgandonationandthattheywanttoparticipateinthistotheirfriends.
Andthatcanbeabigpartofhelpingsolvethecrisisthat'soutthere.
"Zuckerbergsaidhewasmotivatedtolaunchtheprogrambyconversationswithhisgirlfriend,whoisamedicalstudent,andhisfriendshipwithAppleco-founderSteveJobs,whoselifewasextendedbyalivertransplant.
"Wewanttomakeitsimple,"saidZuckerberg.
"Youjustputinthestateorcountrythatyou'refrom,sothatwecanhelplinkyoutotheofficialregistries.
"Inthe"healthandwellness"sectionofusers'timelines,userscanlisttheirstatusasorgandonorsandexplainthedecisiontotheirfriends,inanefforttoraiseawarenessabouttheneedfordonors.
"Today,morethan114,000peopleintheUnitedStates,andmillionsmorearoundtheglobe,arewaitingfortheheart,kidneyorlivertransplantthatwillsavetheirlives,"ZuckerbergsaidinastatementwithFacebookchiefoperatingofficerSherylSandberg.
Anestimated18peopledieeverydayfromthelackofavailableorgans,accordingtoDonateLifeAmerica,anonprofitalliancethatispartneringwithFacebook.
"Wecan'tthankFacebookenoughfortheorganization'scommitmenttohelpingsavelivesbyencouragingAmericanstoregisterasorgan,eyeandtissuedonors.

Facebookisexpectedtomakeitsmuch-anticipatedstockmarketdebutinthecomingweeksinapublicofferingwhichcouldraiseasmuchas$10billion,thelargestflotationeverbyanInternetcompanyonWallStreet.
