Astudy4bytheOrganisationforEconomicCo-operationandDevelopment(OECD)foundthatgirlsstilllacktheconfidencetopursuehigh-paidcareersinscienceandtechnology,despitetheirschoolresultsbeingasgoodas–orbetterthan–thoseachievedbyboys.

Womenmakeuphalfofconsumersandtechnologycompaniesneedtoreflectthisintheirworkforcedesigningthoseproducts.
Afurtherimpactofthegendergapisthatit'spreventingwomenfromplayingtheirfullroleinshapingthefutureofoursociety–orinrealisingthepowerfulpotentialfortechnologytomaketheworldabetterplace.
Ourresearchshowsclearlythatimprovingtheworldisseenasamoreimportantgoalbyfemalesthanmales.
Workingintechnologycanprovidewomenwithawaytodothis.
Again,thestatisticstelltheirownstory.
Inourstudy,50%ofthefemalesweinterviewedsaythemostimportantfactorwhenchoosingtheirfuturecareeris"feelingliketheworkIdomakestheworldabetterplace/hasawiderimpact".
Thecorrespondingfigureformenisonly31%.
Infact,femalesratetheopportunitytomaketheworldabetterplaceasthesecondmostattractiveattributeofacareer,withonly"havinginterestingwork"rankinghigherforthem.

There'sagrowingbodyofevidence–supportedbyeverydayexperienceinorganisationsacrossthecountry–thathavingamorediverseworkforce,includinganequitablegenderbalance,makesforabetterbusiness.
Thisreflectsthewiderangeofbenefitsthatflowfromworkplacediversity,rangingfromtheabilitytoengagecustomersmoreeffectivelybymirroringwidersociety,toenhancedabilitiesinareaswherewomenareespeciallystrong,suchasproblem-solvingandemotionalintelligence.
Putsimply,diversityisabusinessadvantage.
AndotherresearchstudiesbyPwCconfirmthatthebenefitsofdiversityincludehavingahead-startwhenitcomestoattractingthebesttechnologytalent.
Indeed,ourrecentreport–"TheFemaleMillennial–Theneweraoftalent"5–findsthatcreatingandsupportingadiverseworkforceisaprerequisiteforwinningthebattletoattracttoday'stopfemalerecruits.
Inthestudy,83%ofBritishfemalemillennialsstatedthattheyactivelyseekoutemployerswithastrongrecordondiversity,equalityandinclusion–andwhiletheysayemployerstalkaboutdiversity,66%donotfeelopportunitiesareequalforall.
…andfortheUKasawholeAswellashavinganegativeeffectonindividualsandbusinesses,thegendergapintechnologyalsohasimplicationsfortheproductivityandcompetitivenessoftheUKeconomyasawhole.
Ifhalfthepopulationisbeingoverlookedasasourceoftechnologytalent,thentheUKiseffectivelytryingtocompeteinternationallywithonehandtiedbehinditsback.
SofortheUK'sbusinessesandeconomytorealisetheirfullpotential,it'svitalthatwebuildupastrongpipelineofwomenintechnology.

GirlsarelesslikelytostudySTEMsubjectsatschool–andthisgapcontinuesthroughtouniversityOurresearchconfirmsthatthegenderbiasstartsinschoolandcarriesonthrougheverystageofgirls'andwomen'slives.
Bothbeforeuniversityandatuniversity,moreboysthangirlsparticipatinginourresearcharestudyingallSTEMsubjectswiththeexceptionofbiology.
Overall,83%ofmalesarestudyingSTEMsubjectsatschool,comparedto64%offemales.
Thisbreaksdownto17%ofthemalesstudyingphysics,comparedto7%offemales.
Thecorrespondingbreakdownformathsis28%maleand20%female.
Asimilardivergenceemergesatuniversity,whereoverhalf(52%)ofmalesarestudyingaSTEMsubject,comparedtoonly30%offemales.
Thebiggestgapisinengineering–asubjectbeingstudiedby13%ofmaleuniversitystudentswesurveyedandonly2%offemales.
Mathsisbeingstudiedby6%ofmalesand4%offemales.
Forfemalestudents,chemistryandmathsshowthebiggestdrop-offbetweenA-levelsanduniversity,whereasformalesthebiggestdrop-offsareinbiologyandmaths.

Some53%ofgirlssaytheirpreferredcareerwasafactorintheirchoiceofA-Levels,comparedtojust43%ofboys.
Sogirlsarethinkingahead–butthefuturethey'reenvisagingforthemselvesdoesn'tusuallyinvolveacareerintechnology.

Technologycareersarenowhighlycreative,particularlyaroundunderstandingpeople'sbehaviour,andworkingouthowtodevelopdigitaluserexperiences.
Examplesoftechnologybeingusedtounderstandemergingbehavioursincludetheinnovativecustomerjourneysthathavebeencreatedintheretailsectorandthenewpatientexperiencesbeingdevelopedinhealthcare.
Intermofthelatter,womenaremoreinvolvedwithhealthcarethanmen–accountingfor77%ofNHSemployees8–and,accordingtoresearchfromtheUS9femalesmake80%ofbuyingdecisionsabouthealthcareproductsandservices.
Combinedwithwomen'sgreaterdesiretomakeapositivedifferencetotheworld,theseattributessuggestfemalesareactuallybetterpositionedthanmentocreatetechnologytohelpmeetthehealthcareneedsofcitizensandcustomers.
Alackofadviceinschoolsontechnologycareers…Despitesuchexcitingopportunities,girlsaren'tconsideringtechnologyasacareer–partlybecausenobodyisputtingitforwardasapossibleoption.
While33%ofmalerespondentssaythey'vehadacareerintechnologysuggestedtothem,thefigureforfemalesisonly16%–aglaringlackofadvicethat'shelpingtoreinforcethestereotypeofamale-dominatedindustry.
Incaseswherethesuggestionofatechnologycareerismadetoeithergender,ateacheristhepersonmostlikelytodoso.
Butourresearchsuggeststhatthestereotypeoftechnologyasbeing"forboysonly"isprevalentamongstteachersandschools,whoaremuchlesslikelytosuggestatechnologycareertogirls.
Justoveronefifth(21%)offemalestudentssaymoreinformationwouldmakethemmorelikelytoconsideracareerintechnology.

Incontrast,malesaremorelikelytocitesalaryasanimportantfactor–with44%ofmalessayingthis,versus32%offemales.
Girls'greaterdesiretoimprovetheworldisahighlysignificantfinding.
Technologynowmakesahugedifferencetoindividualsandsocietiestheworldover,deliveringdramaticimprovementsinpeople'slives.
Forexample,mobiletechnologyisplayinganincreasinglypivotalroleindisasterreliefeffortsaroundtheworld10,anddevelopingcountriesareattheforefrontofusingmobilehealthtechnologies,overcomingtheirrelativelackofphysicalhealthinfrastructure11.
Givenfemales'greaterdesiretohaveapositiveimpact,moreunderstandingoftransformationaleffectslikethesewouldencouragemoreofthemtogetinvolvedintechnologyasacareer.

"UniversitystudentTechnology,automation,gender–andthefutureofworkAlongsidethefindingsonsubjectandcareerchoices,ourresearchrevealssomefascinatinginsightsintostudents'expectationsforthefutureofworkinaneraofincreasingautomation.
Fifty-fivepercentofmaleand46%offemalerespondentsexpectthattheirfuturecareerwillbeovertakenbyautomationatsomepointinthefuture–with15%ofallstudentsexpectingthistohappenwithinthenext20years,21%after20years,and14%aftertheyretire.
Giventhattheimpactofautomationisalreadystartingtobefelt,it'sinterestingthatsomanystudentsthinkit'sstillsomeyearsaway.
Studentsalsohavemixedviewsonwhethernewtechnologycreatesordestroysjobs.
While76%ofallrespondentsexpectnewtechnologytomakesomejobsredundant,58%expectittocreatenewtypesofjobsand63%expectittochangetheskillsemployerslookfor.
Femalerespondentsareslightlylessoptimisticthanmalesthatnewtechnologywillcreatenewtypesofjobs,with54%offemalessayingitwouldcomparedto62%ofmales.
Allofthispointstoaneedforyoungpeopletobebetterinformedaboutthedisruptiveimpactsandopportunitiesthattechnologyisopeningupintheworkplace.
PwC's"FutureofWork"12reportfoundthatoverhalf(53%)of10,000adultconsumerssurveyedacrossChina,Germany,India,theUKandtheUSthoughttechnologybreakthroughswouldtransformthewaypeopleworkoverthenextfivetotenyears.
Andwithmanytraditionallymalemanufacturingjobsalreadyhavingbeenautomated,morefemale-orientatedofficeandclericaljobsarenextinline.
Bothgendersneedtoadapttothisreality–andabetterunderstandingoftechnologywillhelpthemdothis.
Aswellasrecruitingpeoplewithdigitalskills,organisationsneedtoupskilltheirworkforcetobeadaptive,creativeandcriticalthinkers.
Withthecurrentpaceoftechnologicalchangeitishardtopredictwhatjobswilllooklikeinthefuture,soitisimportantthatemployeesareabletorespondtothenextskillschallenge.
PwC'sGlobalCEOSurvey13revealedthattheskillsmostindemandarepeople-orientatedskillssuchasadaptabilityandproblem-solving(98%ofUKCEOsratethemasimportant),leadershipandcollaboration(both96%)andcreativityandinnovation(both93%).
Thosethatcandisplaytheseskillswillbeinhighdemand.

MoreinteractionwithtechnologycompaniesatschoollevelwillbenefitbothfemalesandmalesandhelptogrowthepipelineoftechnologytalentthatweneedintheUK.
Thekeyistoensurethattechnologyispresentedtogirlsasapotentialcareerchoicebypeopleinpositionsofinfluence:todayit'shardlyevenmentionedtothemasapossibility.
ThereisarealopportunityfortheindustryandeducationsectortoworktogethertohelpbuildthetechnologyskillstheUKwillneedtoprosperinthefuture.
Educatingandinspiringallstudentsabouttechnologycareersatamuchyoungeragewillhelptofuture-proofyoungpeoplewiththeskillsneededandhelptobuildarichtalentpipeline.
Thiswillhelpensurethatno-oneisleftbehindbytheFourthIndustrialRevolution.
