Lastspring,theWSOSBoardsteppeduptothechallengeandaskedmembersoftheWashingtonStateLegislaturetoexpandourprogramtocreatethePathwaysScholarship,theRuralJobsProgramandtheAdvancedHealthCareDegreeScholarshipforunderservedareas.
Collectively,thesethreenewscholarshipswillensurethatstudentsfromacrosstheeducationspectrum–fromstudentspursuingprofessionalandtechnicaldegreesandcertificationsatWashingtonstatecommunityandtechnicalcollegestostudentspursuingpost-baccalaureatehealthcaredegrees–canfillthehigh-demandjobshortagesinWashingtonstate.

EligibleScholarsmustbepursuingorintendtopursueabachelor'sdegreeinoneofthesemajorstobeeligibletoreceiveWSOSfunds.
Todate,86%ofselectedScholarshaveindicatedadesiretopursueabachelor'sdegreeinthetopfourmajorcategoriesofstudy:healthcare(30%),engineering(25%),biologicalorbiomedicalsciences(18%)orcomputerinformationscience(13%).

Giventhatsurveyresponseswereincentivizedresponseswith$5Starbuckscardsforeveryrespondent,plusadrawingfora$250Amazoncard,a75%responseratewasestimatedand431graduateswererandomlyselectedforthesample.
Therearenostatisticallysignificantdifferencesbetweengraduatesintherandomsampleandthosewhowerenotrandomlyselectedintermsofcohortyear,classstandingatapplication,college,major,gender,race/ethnicity,householdincomelevel,highschooldistrictorhomecounty.
ThesurveywasadministeredviaSurveyMonkeyonOctober8,2018,withfivefollow-upemailreminderssenttonon-respondentsthroughOctober26,aswellastwotextmessagesandonephonecallbeforethesurveyclosedonNovember4,2018.
Amongthe431graduatesinthesample,220completedsurveyswerereceived(51%responserate).
Giventhattheactualresponseratewasbelowtheestimatedone,themarginoferrorincreasesfrom+/-5%to+/-6%.
ThissuggeststhatWSOSshouldconsidersamplingtwiceasmanystudentsasdesiredinfutureiterationsofthesurvey,evenwhenofferingincentives.
Itmayalsoindicateaneedforincreasingincentivesforsurveyparticipants.
Therearenostatisticallysignificantdifferencesinproportionsbetweensurveyrespondentsandallothergraduatesbygender,race/ethnicity,familyincomewhileincollege,highschooldistrictorcountyorgraduationprimaryfieldofstudy.
Thissuggeststhatsurveyrespondentsarerepresentativeofallgraduateswithrespecttothesedemographic,geographicandacademiccharacteristics.
GiventhatjuniorsandseniorsincollegewereselectedinCohort1andthattheyreceivedonly$1,000withfewprogrammaticsupportsoffered,itisnotsurprisingthatastatisticallylowerproportionofCohort1Scholarsrespondedtothesurvey(56%ofrespondents,comparedto66%ofallgraduates).
