:0-43DisasterUnemploymentAssistancebenefitsnowavailableforthoseimpactedbywidespreadfiresinmultipleCaliforniacountiesSACRAMENTO–FederalDisasterUnemploymentAssistance(DUA)benefitsarenowavailableforworkers,businessownersandself-employedindividualswholosttheirjobsorbusinessesorhadtheirworkhourssubstantiallyreducedasaresultofthewildfiresthatbeganinseveralCaliforniacountiesonAugust14,2020.
ThefederaldisasterdeclarationonAugust22providesDUAbenefitsforpeoplewhoaredirectlyaffectedbythefires,butwhodonotqualifyforregularstateunemploymentinsurance,PandemicEmergencyUnemploymentCompensation(PEUC),FED-EDextensions,orPandemicUnemploymentAssistance(PUA)benefits.
DUAprovidestemporaryunemploymentbenefitstopeoplewhosejobsorworkhourlosses,orlossofbusinessesareadirectresultofadisaster.
AffectedindividualsareencouragedtoapplyforDUAthroughtheCaliforniaEmploymentDevelopmentDepartment(EDD),whichwillfirstchecktoseeifapplicantscanqualifyforstateunemploymentbenefits,PEUC,FED-EDextensionsorPUAbenefits.
ThedeadlineforfilingaDUAclaimrelatedtothesefiresisSeptember28,2020.
"ThesedestructivefireshavetakenlivesandthreatenedthelivelihoodsofworkersandemployersthroughoutCalifornia,"saidEDDDirectorSharonHilliard.
"WeencourageindividualswhohavebeenimpactedbythefirestoapplyforDisasterUnemploymentAssistancetohelprecoversomeoftheirlostincomeduringthisdifficulttime.
"DUAbenefitshavebeenmadeavailabletothoseimpactedbythewildfiresthatbeganonAugust14andareongoinginthefollowingCaliforniacounties:LakeMontereyNapaSantaCruzSanMateoSolanoSonomaYoloDUAappliestolossesbeginningtheweekofAugust16,2020,andindividualscanreceiveupto$450aweekinbenefitsforamaximumperiodof27weeks.

govTheseunemploymentassistancebenefitsareofferedtovictimsofadisasterandareavailabletoindividualswhomeetanyofthefollowingcriteria:Workedorwereabusinessownerorself-employed,orwerescheduledtobeginworkorself-employment,inthedisasterarea.
Thisincludes,butisnotlimitedto,thoseintheagriculturalandfishingindustries.
Cannotreachworkbecauseofthedisasterorcannolongerworkorperformservicesbecauseofphysicaldamageordestructiontotheplaceofemploymentasadirectresultofthedisaster.
Canestablishthattheworkorself-employmenttheycannolongerperformwastheirprimarysourceofincome.
Cannotperformworkorself-employmentbecauseofaninjuryasadirectresultofthedisaster.
Becametheheadoftheirhouseholdsbecauseofadeathcausedbythedisaster.
Haveappliedforandusedallregularunemploymentbenefitsfromanystate,ordonotqualifyforregularunemploymentbenefitsandremainunemployedasadirectresultofthedisaster.
ToreceiveDUAbenefits,allrequireddocumentationmustbesubmittedwithin21daysfromthedaytheDUAapplicationisfiled.
RequireddocumentationincludesaSocialSecuritynumberandacopyofthemostrecentfederalincometaxformorcheckstubs,orotherdocumentationtosupportthattheindividualswereworkingorself-employedwhenthedisasteroccurred.
Documentationfortheself-employedcanbeobtainedfrombanks,governmententities,oraffidavitsfromindividualshavingknowledgeoftheirbusiness.
