追溯的话，其实是一个根上的，最早可以追溯到晚清邮传部上海高等实业学堂（南洋公学）船政科，南洋公学是现在上海交通大学的前身，船政科应该算是南洋公学的一部分。

后期发展成为上海高等商船学堂、吴淞商船学校，1950年，中央人民政府交通部决定，交通部吴淞商船专科学校与交通大学航业管理系正式合并，成立上海航务学院（这么看，海事大学和上海交通大学有很深的渊源）。

建国后，1953年，大连海运学院成立，为我国惟一的高等航海学府；1958年，交通部决定在上海恢复上海航务学院建制，随委托上海海运局负责教室校舍等基础设施筹建工作，1959年9月5日，学校正式开学，并命名为上海海运学院，为交通部所属。

从历史上看，两个学校都有相同的起源，这也可能是纠纷的起因，其实，说来说去，两个学校都能找到同样的基因。

我目前，大家更承认大连海事大学是1909年建校，毕竟大连海事大学目前算是海事大学的纯正血统，但是，上海海事大学在地理位置上离海事大学的前身更近，这样看的话，其实很不好说哪个是真正的前身。

现在，上海交通大学的校友赵锡成当年也是学航海毕业的，这样看的话，大连海事大学和上海海事大学都没有份，这样就尴尬了。

不过赵锡成和两个海事大学也还是很有渊源的，在两个学校都设有奖学金。

说来说去，也没有什么好纠纷的，毕竟都能和晚清邮传部上海高等实业学堂（南洋公学）船政科找到一定的渊源。

赵锡成，于1946年考入交通大学航政系，毕业后赴美。

1949年在国内修毕航海专业课程后，上船实习。

赵锡成，博士，美籍华人、现任美国福茂集团董事长。

该集团经营航运，贸易及财务等业务。

他出生于上海。

1958年，参加台湾考试院举办的甲级船长特种考试，成绩斐然，打破中国历来考试记录，被誉为中国首任“船长状元” 。

后被公司派到美国继续深造。

2013年5月，赵锡成博士和女儿赵小兰共同获颁“2013年怀海德社会事业奖”。
