Theseformsofcommunicationmaydrawuponthefundamentalhumancapacitytotransferexperiencefromonepersontoanotherthroughoralnarrativesofpersonalexperience.
Afocusonspontaneousrecountingofexperiencewasgreatlystimulatedbythedevelopmentofsociolinguisticresearchinthe1960s,designedtocapturetheclosestapproximationtothevernacularofunmonitoredspeech.
Narrativesofpersonalexperiencewerefoundtoreducetheeffectsofobservationtoaminimum(Labov2001).
Sincethenithasappearedthatsuchnarrativesaredeliveredwithasimilarorganizationinawidevarietyofsocietiesandculturesasforexample,inthePortugueseoffishermeninnortheasternBrazil(Maranho1984).
ThediscussionoforalnarrativestofollowisbasedontheinitialanalysisofLabovandWaletzky1967,asdevelopedfurtherinthesuggestedreading.
Thediscussiontofollowwillfirsttreatthestructuralorganizationofnarrative(temporalorganization,orientation,coda),thenturntotheevaluativecomponent,andfinallytotheconstructionofnarrativeasafolktheoryofcausalityinstrumentaltotheassignmentofpraiseandblame.
StructuralorganizationAnarrativeisdefinedhereasonewayofrecountingpastevents,inwhichtheorderofnarrativeclausesmatchestheorderofeventsastheyoccurred.
